“Video & audio calls coming to X,” posted Musk. “Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC; No phone number needed; X is the effective global address book; That set of factors is unique.” he added in the post. This could revolutionize the way we communicate on the platform, said Musk.
Musk had first spoken about the about calling functionality feature on the platform in May this year. “Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” he had announced in a tweet. Musk has shared his plans for transforming the Twitter into an “everything app” where users can watch videos, express their thoughts — including in 25,000-character long posts, send payments, and more.
Earlier this month, X designer Andrea Conway had hinted about the same in a post. “just called someone on X,” she posted.
X CEO Linda Yaccarino too had confirmed that video calls will be a new feature coming to the platform earlier this month. She termed it a part of the company’s transformation into an “everything app.” She made the comments during her first TV interview after taking on the new role at the social networking app this June. “Soon you’ll be able to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform,” Yaccarino told CNBC. During the conversation, she also listed other features that X offers as well as plans to offer, these include long-form videos and creator subscriptions, as well as payments.
Voice message feature on X currently
Presently, X DMs do support voice messages, support for calls (both voice and video) will be a first. So far, users can have live conversations on the platform through Spaces, a feature that the came to the app after social audio app Clubhouse came into prominence during Covid-19 times. Spaces, however, is an open platform and anyone can join the conversation. It is not for one-on-one conversations.
