20-year-old Xinwen Zheng’s joy knew no bounds as she advanced to the US Open 2023 quarterfinal after taking down last year’s women’s singles runner-up Ons Jabeur in a rather one-sided match. It also happened to be Zheng’s maiden Grand Slam quarters appearance with her previous best being a fourth-place finish in the 2022 French Open.
On Monday, September 4, Zheng defeated Jabeur 6-2, 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. It took the youngster an hour and 22 minutes to beat her Tunisian opponent. Jabeur made 33 unforced errors and that led to her undoing big time.
She also had poor first serve and second serves win percentages of 47 and 41 respectively. Although she earned three breaks of serve, Zheng returned the favour by breaking Jabeur’s serve six times.
Zheng is next scheduled to face newly-crowned World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal.
MEDVEDEV RALLIES BACK
Daniil Medvedev stayed in the hunt for his second US Open title after beating Australia’s Alex de Minaur in four sets at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. He rallied back from a set down to beat his Aussie opponent 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in two hours and 40 minutes.
Both had a similar number of winners and unforced errors, but it was the five breaks of serve from Medvedev that made the difference in the match. Medvedev also had a win percentage of 81 from his first serves. Medvedev will next face Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals.
Rublev, on the other hand, beat Jack Draper in a thrilling four-setter that lasted two hours and 45 minutes. Rublev won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
