OpenAI’s chief executive Sam Altman has received a ‘special visa’. Indonesia has awarded Altman with its first “Golden Visa”. Last week, the country launched a scheme to attract foreign investment to Southeast Asia’s largest economy. A special visa was introduced as a part of this scheme to boost economic development. This visa allows foreigners who make substantial investments in the country to remain for between five and 10 years. For example, if someone invests $350,000 into shares of local public companies, savings accounts or government bonds will be eligible for a five-year stay.
Sam Altman’s Golden Visa
Altman’s “Golden Visa” will be valid for 10 years. As a golden visa holder, the US-based entrepreneur will be able to enjoy priority screening at airports across the country. Moreover, Altman will also be able to enjoy longer periods of stay and ease of entry and exit with this visa.
ChatGPT maker OpenAI was co-founded by Altman along with Tesla CEO Elon Musk among others. Earlier this year, Altman was in Indonesia as part of a tour that took him to several major cities in Asia, including Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore.
What Indonesia said while offering the visa
In a statement, Silmy Karim, Indonesia’s director general of immigration said: “There are several categories of golden visas apart from those based on investment/capital investment, one of which is the golden visa which is given to figures who have an international reputation and can provide benefits for Indonesia. With this golden visa, the hope is that Altman can contribute towards the development and use of AI in Indonesia.”

ChatGPT and AI boom
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. Since its launch, the AI chatbot has gone viral for its ability to generate humanlike responses to users’ prompts. The chatbot had 100 million users two months after its launch.
In an open letter, Altman and other tech leaders recently warned that AI poses a human extinction risk on par with nuclear war. The letter also noted that reducing the risks associated with the technology should be a global priority.
