India’s maiden appearance in the Asia Cup 2023 was washed out on Saturday owing to rainfall. India were bowled out on a total of 266 runs while Pakistani side did not get to face a single bowl with covers being pulled out on the ground due to rainfall.
During the match, Pakistan’s pace factory of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Haris Rauf managed to get four early wickets for a score of just 66 runs. However, a more than 100 run partnership between Hardik Pandya (87) and Ishan Kishan (82) helped steady the ship for India, ultimately reaching a total of 266 runs in their 50 overs.
Shaheen Shah Afridi was standout bowler for Pakistan, taking 4 wickets for just 35 runs in his 10 overs while Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf also managed to pick three wickets each.
Pakistan qualified for the Super Fours stage:
Both India and Pakistan were awarded a point each after the match at the Pallekele International Stadium was washed out. The ensuing result meant Pakistan with 3 points to their name had qualified for the Super Fours stage of the tournament.
The Babar Azam led side had earlier handed a convincing 238 run defeat to Nepal during the opening match of the tournament to get their 2 points.
India’s road to the Super Four stage:
India are placed with Nepal and Pakistan in Group A while Sri Lanka have faced Bangladesh once and Afghanistan are placed in Group B.
India and Nepal will take to the field for their second Asia Cup match on Monda and the winner of that game will qualify to the Super Four stage along with Pakistan. However, if there is yet another washout like on Saturday then India are likely to qualify with 2 points to their name.
