Ukraine struck six Russian regions and destroyed military transport planes at an airfield on Wednesday. The attacks came as a nearly simultaneous attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv killed two people.
Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov, Ryazan and Moscow regions in Russia witnessed the attacks. At least four giant Il-76 transport planes were damaged, two of which had “burst into flames” in Pskov, Russia’s Tass news agency reported.
A military airfield more than 600 km (400 miles) from Ukraine in Pskov city was attacked. A huge fire led to at least four giant Il-76 transport planes getting damaged, the report said.
Two of them had “burst into flames”, the report added.
ATTACK ON KYIV
Meanwhile, Kyiv witnessed what is termed as Russia’s ‘largest air strike’ on Kyiv in months. The debris of downed missiles fell on buildings, a park and a school, reported news agency Reuters.
All 28 incoming missiles and 15 of the 16 drones were shot down by Ukrainian air defences, said General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s armed forces.
The Kyiv Independent shared a video showing the aftermath of the missile attacks in the city. Some residential areas in Donetsk Oblast were also attacked, it said.
Serhii Popko, the head of the city’s Military Administration, said that Kyiv had not experienced such an attack since spring, CNN reported.
“The blast wave broke all the windows, the entry doors are broken too. We were terribly scared,” news agency Reuters quoted Liudmyla Savchuk, a 57-year-old teacher whose apartment in northwestern Kyiv was damaged, as saying.
“Then there was another explosion in a couple of seconds, 20 or 30 seconds. We’re cleaning everything now,” she said, showing a piece of debris that had flown through a window.
UKRAINE’S DRONE STRIKE IN RUSSIA
In Russia, the governor of Pskov posted a video on Telegram showing a huge fire with the sounds of sirens and an explosion at the air base. The video was widely shared on social media.
Talking about the attacks in its regions, the Russian foreign ministry said the attacks would “not go unpunished” and the drones could not have reached so far into Russian territory without Western help.
Meanwhile, Kyiv confirmed that it had destroyed military planes in Pskov.
“Yes, four IL-76 transport planes were destroyed in Pskov at an airfield, they are beyond repair. Also, several other of those (aircraft) are damaged, but the information is being checked,” Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s GUR military agency, told Reuters.
