Indian batsman Shubman Gill redeemed himself through a match-winning performance against Nepal, following disappointment after a loss against Pakistan. The victory, in which Gill and Rohit Sharma both scored unbeaten half-centuries, secured India’s berth in the Asia Cup’s Super Four stage.
According to the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, India needed to reach a score of 145 from 23 overs. Both Sharma and Gill powered through this target with 74 (59 balls) and 67 (62 balls) respectively – both remaining not out. This decisive win saw India end their Group A matches with three points, matching Pakistan’s tally, who had earlier qualified for the Super Four. Nepal exited the Asia Cup, however, without a single point.
In a post-match chat with Asia Cup broadcasters, an introspective Gill remarked, “I was quite disappointed with my performance after the Pakistan game. Today, it was important for me to finish the match along with Rohit, and we succeeded in doing so.” He went on to laud Sharma’s aggressive approach to aerial shots, contrasting it with his preference for boundary hits, suggesting that this complementary style of play worked in their favour. Gill also acknowledged the challenge put forth by Nepal’s bowlers, stating, “They bowled very well with the new ball, testing us. However, we realized that the match would swing in our favour as the ball got wet. And that’s how it unfolded.”
Hence, India finished their Group A engagements with three points, while Pakistan had already entered the Super Four having logged three points. Nepal bowed out of the Asia Cup without any points. But they had some special moments in the match both with ball and bat.
