New Zealand quickly recovered from the harrowing defeat to United Arab Emirates on Saturday (August 19) to seal the three-match series on the following day with a fairly comfortable 32-run win. Once again, Mark Chapman was among the runs and ended on the winning side this time as he and Will Young forged a key 84-run stand for the third wicket after being down to 35 for 2 in 5 overs.
Mitchell Santner provided some final-over impetus with the bat with a cameo of 20 from 11 balls. After UAE dismissed Chapman for 51 off 32 (5 fours, 2 sixes) and Young for 56 off 46 (7 fours, 1 six) in the 17th over, their bowlers tried to close in and restrict New Zealand at the death once again. Zahoor Khan and Muhammad Jawadullah conceded six runs each in the 18th and 19th over respectively but Santner successfully took on Zahoor in the final over – starting with a four and ending with a six, dragging the visitors to 166 for 5.
New Zealand bowled far better this game, as the UAE batting heroes of Saturday – Muhammad Waseem and Asif Khan – were sent packing by the ninth over. In fact, when Asif fell to Adithya Ashok UAE were already four down for just 53 runs. In the same over, Ansh Tandon was run out to leave them with half their side back in the pavilion. Basil Hameed and Aaryan Afzal Khan refused to let the game go as they vowed to fight it out with a threatening sixth-wicket stand worth 68 runs off 57 balls. Ben Lister, who made his white-ball debuts earlier this year, dismissed both to end even the thought of a late heist for UAE.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 166/5 in 20 overs (Will Young 56, Mark Chapman 51; Junaid Siddique 3-26) beat United Arab Emirates 134/7 in 20 overs (Aayan Afzal Khan 42, Basil Hameed 24; Ben Lister 3-35) by 32 runs
