The selectors opted to include Tilak along with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, both of whom are making comebacks following substantial injury hiatuses.
Tilak, who has already featured in 7 T20Is, amassing 174 runs at an average of 34.80, including a half-century, described his feelings in a video released by the BCCI. In the video, he expressed his emotions after securing a spot in India’s squad for the Asia Cup.
“I never dreamt that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup and that too in the ODI side. I was obviously dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs, but it is a big thing for me. I have always dreamt of this. In a single year, I got my T20 debut. And secondly, in the next month, getting a call for the Asia Cup also. I am just preparing for it. I am pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs,” Tilak said.

Tilak, who plays under the leadership of Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians, also revealed the pep talk he got from the India captain.
“Rohit bhai has always backed me. When I was playing in the IPL also, he used to come by. I would be a bit nervous in the IPL at the start. He would come near me, talk about the game, and say, “Always enjoy your game, always feel free whenever you want to talk, you can come in any time or text me. So I will be there for you anytime. With that, I have expressed myself in IPL. I am expressing everywhere. I always talk to him. He says, “enjoy your game” and that’s what I am doing,” he said.
In 25 matches for Mumbai Indians, Tilak has scored 740 runs at an average of 38.95, including three fifties.
